A digital photograph of

TVN Niagara's Exec.VP, CIO, & VP Engineering:

Tracy Wilks, Daniel Shakhmundes, and David Storey, respectively.

Taken last year, around the time of TV Niagara's CRTC hearing in Niagara Falls.

Groundless criticism from an anonymous comment to my previous blog post inspired me to choose this picture of awesome times; positivity to balance out the negativity.

Tim Horton's IPO:

I'm not really into Tim Horton's; face it, the coffee is made using cheap beans and most people only like it for the drug (caffeine), added fatty cream and processed sugar. However, I do find the stock market of interest, and now you can buy some Timmie's on the Toronto Stock Exchange (TSX).

Check out the Tim Hortons Inc. stock performance on Yahoo! Canada Finance.

The Initial Public Offering (IPO) was yesterday (Friday, March 24th, 2006), and it looks like it hit the market at about CAD$32, dropping to around CAD$28 by the end of the day.

OpenOffice.org - the best Microsoft Office alternative!

If you haven't yet heard of OpenOffice, then you better pay attention:

According to the front page of OpenOffice.org, “OpenOffice.org is a multiplatform and multilingual office suite and an open-source project. Compatible with all other major office suites, the product is free to download, use, and distribute.”

Much to my satisfaction, I've been using OpenOffice for years. All the while, I have been wondering why anyone would pay hundreds and even thousands of dollars for less-capable software such as Microsoft Office.

Skype 2.0, now with video calling

Daniel Shakhmundes goes on-line for free in Israel, using downtown Jerusalem's public wireless internet access

Just over a year ago, while I was in Israel, I used Skype to “call” my girlfriend in Canada, for free!

Using my laptop on downtown Jerusalem's free public wireless internet access (it provided at least 20 KBytes/sec), there was no cost at all (aside from my computer ;-)

I just noticed that a new version of Skype was released yesterday.

Skype now does video calling. Note that Skype just went from version 1 to version 2, so it is a major upgrade.
